Cannabis legalization: 80.8% of citizens consulted respond favorably

Légalisation du cannabis : 80,8% des citoyens consultés répondent favorablement

Cannabis legalization is no longer a taboo in France...

The figures speak for themselves: they indicate that more than 4 out of 5 people believe that cannabis legalization would be a good idea. Other details: support for decriminalization was put forward in 13.8% of cases, increased penalties in 4.6% of cases, while maintaining the current legal framework reached 0.8% (92% of respondents judged it ineffective).

Caroline Janvier is an LREM deputy and rapporteur for the Joint Fact-Finding Mission on the regulation and impact of different uses of cannabis. For her, there is no longer any doubt. It's time to move forward: "We now know that cannabis legalization is no longer a taboo in France and that our fellow citizens recognize the ineffectiveness of the current legislation on the matter."

One reaction leading to another: on Sunday, Jean-Baptiste Moreau, also an LREM deputy (Creuse) and rapporteur of the fact-finding mission, declared: "We will have to launch a real popular consultation and why not a referendum. We will make proposals within a month."

He continued: "Today, we are facing a ban but record consumption, so the situation is unsustainable. A very significant parallel economy has developed, which finances other networks, arms trafficking, and so on."

Respondents favorable to the regulated marketing and cultivation of cannabis

The panel members' relationship with cannabis breaks down as follows: nearly 30% of respondents to this citizen consultation stated that they had never consumed cannabis. Occasional users represent 38.3%, regular users 17%, and daily users 13.9%.

Regarding marketing, a majority (62.4%) would approve of cannabis being sold in specialized shops. Among the remaining respondents, 24.2% chose regulated sales modeled on alcohol, 8.6% sales in tobacco shops, and 3.8% free sales. Another eloquent figure: 86% of respondents, in the prospect of legalization or decriminalization, would like the State to allow individuals to cultivate their own cannabis in a regulated manner.
