Why and how to dry your CBD flowers? The complete post-harvest guide

Pourquoi et comment sécher ses fleurs de CBD ? Le guide complet post-récolte

Harvesting your hemp plants is only the first step in producing premium-quality buds. In reality, nearly 50% of the final quality of a CBD flower is determined during drying and curing.

Poorly dried flowers risk developing mold, losing their aromatic profile, or offering a harsh consumption experience. Conversely, controlled drying reveals the richness of the terpenes, ensures optimal shelf life, and preserves all the cannabinoids.

Why is drying CBD flowers essential?

When a CBD flower is freshly cut, it contains about 75% to 80% water. To store and consume it under good conditions, this moisture level must be reduced to around 10% to 12%.

1. Prevent the appearance of mold and bacteria

Stagnant water in dense plant matter is an ideal breeding ground for pathogenic fungi (Botrytis cinerea). Fast, controlled drying eliminates excess ambient moisture.

2. Eliminate chlorophyll

Chlorophyll provides an unpleasant "cut grass" flavor and strong bitterness. During slow drying, the plant breaks down the chlorophyll, making the flower smoother.

3. Preserve and develop terpenes

Terpenes are extremely volatile. Gentle drying at low temperatures preserves the integrity of these aromatic molecules.

4. Stabilize cannabinoid composition

Drying away from ultraviolet rays locks in the active ingredients without causing premature oxidation.

The 4 ideal environmental conditions

Parameter Target value Impact
Temperature 18°C to 21°C Prevents evaporation of terpenes.
Relative humidity 50% to 60% Prevents mold while avoiding drying that is too rapid.
Lighting Total darkness Protects cannabinoids from UV rays.
Ventilation Indirect breeze Ensures uniform air circulation.

Step-by-step method

  1. Setup: Provide a thermo-hygrometer, a fan pointed at a wall, and an exhaust fan with a carbon filter.
  2. Arrangement: Hang branches upside down or spread buds out on drying nets without crowding them.
  3. Daily monitoring: Check humidity and watch for any signs of mold for 7 to 14 days.
  4. The snap test: The stem should break with a clean "snap" before proceeding to curing.
