Cannabis intensifies sex life: fact or fiction?

Le cannabis intensifierait la vie sexuelle : info ou intox ?

Also known as Indian hemp, cannabis is a substance whose consumption is highly controlled or even prohibited in some countries. While scientists are still trying to determine the nature of the relationship between this substance and sex, common belief seems to have already taken a stand.

Indeed, more and more people believe that cannabis has an important role to play in enhancing sexual life. It even seems that some scientific evidence supports this hypothesis. A recent study concluded that cannabis does have an impact on women's sex lives. But how? Based on the responses obtained from female cannabis users in this study, significant consumption of this drug could increase arousal, thus contributing to amplified orgasms, for better sexual satisfaction.

How can cannabis affect a couple's sex life? What are the benefits of this plant for women's sexual fulfillment? We tell you everything.

The study results and scientists' conclusion

According to a study published in the journal Sexual Medicine, it seems easy to establish a link between regular and frequent cannabis use and increased sexual desire in women. The study was conducted on 452 female cannabis users. Its role was to evaluate the sexual function of these women during the 4 weeks preceding the survey. Based on the targeted questions asked, the conclusion was clear. For most of these women, their regular cannabis use had a major impact on the quality of their sexual relations.

According to the survey, this substance intervenes in very specific areas, which are often recognized as being at the origin of the sensation of pleasure that accompanies sexual intercourse. Based on the responses of the women surveyed, cannabis use would exponentially increase desire and arousal. However, it would also have an impact on reducing pain sensation, lubrication, intensifying orgasm, and finally, overall satisfaction.

As you can see, the results of this study clearly demonstrate that the relationship between cannabis consumption and the amplification of sexual pleasure does indeed exist. Moreover, it seems that this survey on the Female Sexual Function Index is the very first study of its kind based on a validated questionnaire and carried out on a considerable sample.

In conclusion, a high FSFI score would logically signify better sexual function. Furthermore, a score below average could suggest the existence of certain dysfunctions. Based on the frequency of cannabis consumption, it was easy for researchers to reach the following conclusion: regular and frequent cannabis consumption would be closely related to a decrease in sexual dysfunctions.

Similarly, scientists' conclusions showed that more frequent consumption would reduce the risk of abnormal sexual functioning by 21%.

The study results also allowed for a correlation between the frequency of Indian hemp consumption and arousal or orgasm intensity. Although weak, another relationship was also established between cannabis consumption and pain perception. Given all the benefits associated with the consumption of this plant, it seems evident that female Indian hemp users are less prone to pain during sexual intercourse. Less pain also means increased satisfaction during the sexual act.

Which cannabis-based products should be consumed to increase female sexual function?

Although captivating in many respects, this study did not make it possible to know exactly which cannabis-based substances would be likely to influence sexual functions in women. Similarly, it did not establish a reliable relationship between the reasons for consuming this substance and the reactions it generates on a sexual level.

At the end of the study and considering the answers given by the respondents, it seems obvious that the mode of consumption or the type of cannabis consumed has no real impact on the sexual function of women. This simply implies that regardless of the way the substance enters the body, it is likely that the results will be unchanged.

But despite all the clarifications provided by this study, one question seems to remain: what would be the mechanism by which cannabis would succeed in impacting women's sexual functions?

How does cannabis stimulate sexual functions?

If they managed to demonstrate through this study that cannabis would have such an impact on women's sexual functions, researchers also shed light on an essential point. According to them, there are a certain number of mechanisms to explain these results.

Very involved in sexual function in women, certain nerve cells in the body would be affected by cannabis consumption. By acting on this body function, cannabis thus reduces anxiety, which is bound to be felt in the quality of sexual relations. Indeed, the report shows that most patients consume cannabis to reduce anxiety and its related effects.

The reduction of anxiety would therefore improve the sexual experience through an intensification of desire, orgasm, and, by rebound, satisfaction. In addition, it is possible that the activation of CB1 (cells very sensitive to the effect of cannabis) contained in serotonergic neurons (which produce serotonin) could improve - enhance the sexual experience.
